We practiced whittling soap today. Mrs. Staley made a dog. We all had a great time. I foresee many bars of soap being shaped over the summer. Making butter was a blast. It was a little different tasting because it was soft and unsalted. Almost everyone enjoyed it though. The bread was yummy too. It wasn't as sweet as most of us are used to because we didn't add honey, but that didn't stop everyone from eating all four loaves. We are really getting into the spirit of the Oregon Trail.
If you want to make your own butter, here is the video we watched in class: http://thehappyscientist.com/science-video/making-butter Today we made homemade wheat bread from a recipe similar to Mrs. Staley's grandmother's (her Mema). We had a great time learning about yeast and baking. Everyone who wanted to got a chance to knead some of the bread dough. Now we just have to wait for it to bake so we can try it. :)
For anyone that wants to use the recipe at home, here is the link: http://sayyes.com/2012/10/memas-whole-wheat-bread.html - we omitted the honey in this recipe because we didn't have any. You should try this at home with the honey to see if you like it better. Today we made dip candles like they made during pioneer times. We had a lot of fun. It was surprising how hard it was to maintain the right temperature even with modern technology.
We all worked with our parent volunteer to make quilt squares a couple weeks ago. Mrs. Jessica was able to take the squares we designed and sew them onto a tablecloth so that we could understand better what it takes to make a quilt. It was a lot of fun on the field trip today. We had beautiful weather to be outside learning about the Oregon Trail. What was everyone's favorite part? I really enjoyed the Bound for Oregon movie. -Mrs. Jessica Mr. Giesbers has assigned a math problem for the weekend. Please find the "mean" of the following numbers: 5,3,4,7,3,9,12. Extra credit if you can find the median and mode. In Mrs. Staley's class we are learning about the Native American tribes such as: Chinook, Tillamook, Takelma, Nez Perce, Northern Paiute, and Klamath. We are all excited to get our research done and start working on a model of our tribes environment. In novel studies Mrs. Staley's class is reading Tuck Everlasting, a story about a girl named Winnie who ran away and found a spring of eternal youth. Mrs. Harsin's class is reading Stone Fox, a story about a kid who enters a dog race to save his grandpas farm. Mrs. McCabe's class is reading Number the Stars, a story about two girls friendship during the Nazi occupation of Copenhagen, Denmark. |
